If you’re a MINI Cooper fanatic looking for the drive of a lifetime, then MOTD is an event you won’t want to miss! This year, the 22nd annual meet-up (April 30th-4th May 2024) saw 580 MINI lovers and 456 MINIs tackling one of the most exhilarating roads in the world—the Tail of the Dragon.

It’s not just about the drive—it’s about the people, the camaraderie, and the sheer joy of bringing together so many MINIs in one place. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned Dragon tamer, here’s everything you need to know!

🏁 What Makes the Tail of the Dragon So Legendary?

This twisting stretch of road at the Tennessee/North Carolina border is an absolute dream for thrill-seekers. With 318 curves packed into just 11 miles, there’s no room for boredom—or mistakes!

  • Length: 11.1 miles from Tabcat Bridge to Deals Gap

  • Curves: 318 tight, technical twists and turns

  • Elevation Change: +1,085 feet

  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for deer, wild boar, and even the occasional bear!

With no driveways, intersections, or distractions, it’s just you, your MINI, and the ultimate driving challenge.

🏎️ Highlights from Minis On The Dragon 2024

This year’s event drew attendees from 28 US states plus Canada, Germany, and the UK. Florida took the crown for the biggest turnout! Here are some of the standout moments:

  • New Leadership: After 15 years at the helm, Barry "Snooter" Patascher passed the torch to the new Dream Team of Colin Squire, Leon Dixon, Cory Brown, and Xiek.

  • Dragon Parade: Always a fan favourite, led by Jason “XIEK” Hurdle.

  • Cabin Crawl: A chance to explore 8 unique cabins and meet fellow MINIacs.

  • Live Music: "Music Under the Stars" at Fontana Village set the perfect vibe.

  • Car Shows & Races: Braggin’ on the Dragon showcased the best MINIs, while Draggin’ Dragons (a Pinewood Derby) had everyone cheering.

  • Charity Success: Over 1,000 lbs of food and $8,755 were donated to the local food bank, pushing the event’s total donations to $155,548 over the years!

🚦 How to Tackle the Dragon Like a Pro

The Dragon isn’t just another road—it’s an experience. Here’s how to make the most of it:

✔ Take it at your own pace – You’re not in a race!

✔ Stay in your lane – Cutting corners is a bad idea.

✔ Focus on the road – This is a drive, not a sightseeing tour.

✔ Keep a "safe zone" – Maintain a healthy gap between cars.

✔ Watch out for trucks – Some struggle to navigate the tight turns.

✔ Use pull-offs wisely – If a faster driver is behind you, let them pass.

✔ Go easy on the brakes – Trust your tyres rather than slamming the brakes.

✔ Plan your timing – Early mornings and evenings are the quietest times to drive.

🏔️ Other Scenic Routes Worth Exploring

If you fancy more breathtaking drives while you’re in the area, check these out:

1️⃣ The Cherohala Skyway

Distance: 36 miles through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests

Best For: Sweeping curves and epic mountain views

Warning: Tempting as it is to push the speed, take it easy—accidents are more common here than on the Dragon!

2️⃣ Highway 441 (Great Smoky Mountains National Park)

Distance: 34 miles (Cherokee, NC ➝ Gatlinburg, TN)

Best For: Stunning scenery, but expect heavier traffic.

3️⃣ The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive

Distance: 469 miles from Cherokee, NC, to Waynesboro, VA, plus an additional 105 miles on Skyline Drive from Front Royal, VA, to Waynesboro.

Best For: A long, leisurely drive through breathtaking Appalachian landscapes.

4️⃣ The Foothills Parkway

Distance: 21 miles linking Little River Road to the Dragon (US 321 to US 129).

Best For: Less traffic, fantastic views, and a more relaxed alternative to the Dragon.

Speed Limit: 45 mph, perfect for a scenic cruise.

🎒 What to Pack for the Ultimate Trip

MOTD takes place in a remote area with limited phone signal, so it’s best to be well-prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

✅ Essentials:

  • FRS/GMRS Radios (Set to Channel 7, Subchannel 21)

  • Cash (for small vendors and emergencies)

  • GPS System (don’t rely on mobile data!)

  • First Aid & Roadside Kit

  • Anti-Nausea Tablets (for passengers prone to motion sickness)

  • Warm Clothing (nights can get chilly!)

  • Bug Spray & Sunscreen

🔧 MINI Maintenance Checklist

Before hitting the Dragon, ensure your car is in top shape:

Oil Change – If you're close to 5,000 miles, get it done early.

Brake Check – Pads should have at least 50% life left.

Tyres – Check tread depth and wear patterns.

Battery – Make sure it’s fully charged and securely fastened.

Lights & Wipers – Replace anything that’s worn out.

Torque Your Lug Nuts – 83 ft/lb for 1st gen, 102 ft/lb for 2nd gen MINIs.
